Scientific Program

The second SPIN short course will focus on hands-on experience with seismic instrumentation, including new types of sensors such as DAS and rotational seismometers. The short course will consist of lectures, deployment of different types of sensors in the field. This will be complemented by computer practicals to work with typical data sets for each type of sensor. Note that these computer practicals will rely heavily on Python and Obspy, so a solid grasp of programming with these tools is a pre-requisite for participation.

Practical exercises

During the short course, we will work on the data that is recorded by the different instruments during practical exercise sessions. For this, please bring your laptop, with sufficient free disk space, or an external disk, for storing and processing data.
Specific information about what to install on your laptop beforehand will follow by email. In any case, you will need a Python setup (at least 3.6), e.g. in an anaconda environment.

The venue is the ‘Cévéo Village Vacances’, located in the Landes pine forest, on the edge of the lake.
Transfer to and from Bordeaux Train station and Bordeaux Airport (Merignac, BOD) will be arranged. At the moment, we are aiming for at least one bus departure at the following times on May 17th:

For departure on May 22nd, we aim for a bus transfer from the venue which arrives:

  • 10:30 at Bordeaux St.-Jean Train station.

More bus transfer times will be added, depending on arrival times of particpants. However, if you can organize your travel to to correspond to one of the ‘main’ bus transfer times, it facilitates things on our end!

To limit the carbon footprint of the meeting, we encourage you to travel by train if possible. For reference, some train connections are listed:

  • Trains arrive from Paris/Zürich - every hour:17
  • from Grenoble - uneven hour:32
  • from Hamburg/ Berlin - 17:17, 19:17

Excursion and activities

Beside the installation of seismic instruments in the forest and beach around the venue, no excursion has been planned during the short course. However, for those who stay for both the short course and the workshop, there will be some free time on Sunday. There are many possibilities for fun activities in the region: surfing at the beach, climbing the highest Sand dune in Europe, visiting a famous Bordeaux Wine Château (including wine tasting), etc etc. Near the venue, there is possibility for bike rides, strolls through the Landes pine forest, visits to the (lake or ocean) beach, ..
